We went in for our regular anatomy scan excited to see our growing baby boy. It was then that he was diagnosed with a serious medical condition, congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Within minutes we were seen by a specialist and our world was changing again.
CDH occurs when the diaphragm doesn't close all the way during development inside the womb. Because of the hole in the diaphragm, this causes organs to shift through the hole and develop in the chest cavity. Because of the organs in the chest cavity, his left lung is not growing properly. It is not even visible on ultrasound. His heart is shifted over to the right of the chest under his right lung causing his right lung not to grow properly.
With this diagnosis, we have already had to see several specialists and have several tests done to help make a plan of care for the rest of the pregnancy and help have a better plan of action for when the baby is born. We will have many more tests done throughout the pregnancy just to prepare to meet our baby boy. We will also be meeting with several different surgical groups and hospitals to find the best place to care for our baby. After he is born he will need immediate intubation and then transferred to a Children's hospital in order to have surgery immediately after he's stabilized. They have also prepared us for the possibility of ECMO- heart & lung bypass. After the surgery he will recover in the NICU where his lungs will need time to grow and he will have to learn to breathe normally. There is no way to know how long baby G's recovery will take.
This baby is already loved so much and we want to do everything we can to get us and him the best care and treatment in order to have the best chance of healing. Your support will help us pay for the unexpected specialists we have to see throughout the next few months, the many tests we are having done, as well as any unforeseen medical bills that come up along the way.
We ask that you pray for us as we walk this path in the medical world once again. We ask for prayers for wisdom that we make the best decisions possible and wisdom for the doctors as they make a plan and prepare to treat baby G. We ask that you please please pray for baby Goehring- for healing and for strength.
