Four years ago, Lois Geiger’s husband Doug was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a fatal motor neuron disease that targets nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain. As the disease progresses, ALS affects control of the muscles needed to move, speak, eat and breathe. In September 2025, during a hospitalization for a temporal lobe seizure, Doug received an additional diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a condition that can occur alongside ALS.

Frontotemporal Dementia, or FTD, represents a group of brain disorders caused by degeneration of the frontal and/or temporal lobes of the brain. FTD typically strikes younger people between the ages of 45-64. The symptoms of FTD include uncharacteristic personality changes, apathy, and unexplained struggles with decision-making, movement, speaking or language comprehension. Often people appear physically healthy despite the neurodegeneration.

Receiving this dual diagnosis of two terminal neurodegenerative diseases has been devastating for the Geiger family. Each day brings new challenges as his symptoms progress, and the need for at-home care continues to grow. The family is doing everything possible to ensure his comfort, safety, and dignity.

The disease has limited Doug’s ability to work, and now it is crucial for him to have an experienced caregiver at home. Professional in-home care is extremely expensive.
