The Little Mekong Night Market, Minnesota's Original Night Market, is a vibrant street festival in Saint Paul, Minnesota, that transforms a stretch of University Avenue into a bustling hub of commerce, culture, and community. Inspired by the traditional open-air night markets of Southeast Asia—common in countries like Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam—it serves as the marquee event for the Little Mekong Cultural District.
The Little Mekong Night Market was founded in 2014 by the Asian Economic Development Association (Aeda), led by Va-Megn Thoj, the founder and CEO of Aeda. It was born out of a need for "creative placemaking" during the construction of the Green Line light rail. Local business owners feared that the disruptive construction would displace the communities and businesses along University Avenue, including many Asian-owned small businesses that had called the Frogtown and Rondo neighborhoods home since the 1980s.
By naming and claiming the district as Little Mekong, Aeda created the Night Market as a way to draw people back to the area, turning a period of economic uncertainty into a celebration of resilience.
Artists, Food, and Artisans
The Little Mekong Night Market is famous for its sensory overload—colorful lights, live music, and the smell of grilled street food.
- Food Vendors: Visitors queue for hours for authentic delicacies like flame-grilled squid-on-a-stick, spicy papaya salad, khao poon (rice vermicelli soup), and taro ice cream served in coconut shells. Notable past participants include Soul Lao, Marc Heu Pâtisserie, and Ninja Sushi.
- Artisans & Makers: The market typically hosts dozens of vendors (often 80+) selling handmade Hmong jewelry, traditional textiles, contemporary Asian-American art, and local crafts.
- Performers: The entertainment ranges from traditional Southeast Asian dance and Hmong music to modern breakdancing and local indie bands, reflecting the district’s "Minnesota twist."
Attendance and Mission
The event has grown into one of the most popular summer festivals in the Twin Cities:
- Attendance: Since its inception, the market has attracted over 250,000 visitors. A single weekend event can draw tens of thousands of people.
- Mission: Its primary goal is to build community, foster cultural and economic vibrancy by uplifting traditions and supporting Asian American small businesses. It seeks to preserve the diverse cultural identity of the neighborhood while driving foot traffic to local shops.
Cultural and Economic Impact
The Little Mekong Night Market has been a catalyst for change in Frogtown, Rondo, and Saint Paul:
- Economic Impact: The market has generated over $5 million for local artists and small businesses. It serves as a "business incubator," allowing many vendors to test their concepts before opening brick-and-mortar shops.
- Cultural Impact: It has successfully rebranded an area into a cultural destination. It honors the history of Southeast Asian refugees while bridging the gap with the historic African American community of Rondo.
- Urban Vitality: By utilizing the Green Line light rail, the Night Market has turned public transit into a "river of culture," making the neighborhood accessible to suburbanites and tourists alike.
In 2019, the Night Market was recognized with a Distinction in Placemaking award for its ability to leverage arts and culture to achieve physical and social impact, proving that it is much more than just a place to grab a good plate of food—it is a main destination along the Green Line to experience the rich traditions of Minnesota's Asian communities.
