Living in Evanston is terrific as we have the lake, restaurants, cultural events and a wonderful gem known to those who have visited us during the past 16 years. That gem is Piccolo Theatre, a small company that specializes in comedy, and that hosts an annual street fair in June (Custer Fair). But the theatre is now in a situation that isn’t a bit funny, and there is a serious danger that the Evanston community and city businesses could lose Piccolo.
We are dedicated to exploring the range of comedy: from the ridiculous to the sublime, from the pratfall to the witticism, from the farce that makes your belly hurt because you laughed so hard to the intimate story that brings equal tears of joy and heartache. We keep our prices low so that everyone in the community can come, with further discounts for local residents. We are a 501c(3) non-profit organization. Every penny we raise goes back into the local community. In addition, we put on Custer Fair during June of each year.
For many years, we have leased space in the Metra train depot on Main Street in Evanston. Because of the limitations of the space, we had planned a move to a new location in the summer of 2017. Our landlord is Union Pacific, who had a clause to give us 90 days to vacate. They have done so. Thus, we must leave our home by December 31, 2016. The City of Evanston has given us words of direction and verbal support but nothing else.
Therefore, we are now faced with one-time expenses for moving, office space, storage space, rehearsal space and performance spaces that were not part of our 2016-17 plan.
We need your help. Those of you who know us and those of you who are hearing about us for the first time - we are asking you, the community, for help in keeping us alive. Your assistance is tax deductible.
We’re grateful to GoFundMe for making it possible for us to get the word out about our situation. However, you should know that they collect almost 8% of any donations that they transmit to us. If you’d like to donate to Piccolo directly, you can do that here:
