What if the one thing you knew how to do- the one thing you were good at- became illegal? And if anyone caught you doing it, you would be killed. Would you risk it to save your entire country? Or fall in line like everyone else? That is the choice my main character SUKI has to face when she is caught between serving a government she has always been aligned with, or standing with those who fight for a greater cause.

In my futuristic hour long drama THE FUTURE BELONGS TO US, the United States has been divided into 6 factions, AI Soldiers help maintain control in what is now called The Free State, the current President has been in power for over 30 years hoping to ship his people away from this earth and out to a safer, cleaner one. And music, instruments, singing, and the like, are completely outlawed and all but forgotten.

Thinking that all instruments had been destroyed, you can imagine the President’s surprise when his right-hand man, GENERAL GABRIEL BUCHANAN, and his soldiers MARCUS and RAYMOND arrest a woman harboring an illegal piano to send codes to other underground musicians, all determined to stop the President’s fascist regime.

That’s when we meet our main character SUKI, a high schooler solely focused on scoring well on her Placement Exams so she can secure her and her family’s spot on the first shipment to the New Earth. But during a solo study session outside of town, she happens upon an old man, MILO, doing something she has never seen before- using a long stick to make some kind of sound on a curvy, wooden item he places beneath his chin. Now, Suki has a choice- tell a Government Official what she saw, or agree to keep this secret and team up with these underground musicians to try and overthrow the government.

With the same oppression and dystopia as THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE, and the tense futuristic darkness of EQUILIBRIUM, The Future Belongs to Us calls attention to the dangers this country faces if we do not speak up when we see those in power doing wrong, and what we discover when we stray from the path we have always known, and choose to still listen to the music.
