Kayla and Marjorie contracted Covid 19 in March. Marjorie recovered but Kayla was admitted to the hospital and placed on a vent in an induced coma for 20 days. She has had many continuing complications and Covid Long Hauler symptoms that impact life on a daily basis. Kayla was in the hospital and rehabilitation center for 3 months, the majority of that time being when hospitals didn't allow visitors. She required hospitalization again twice since then, with complications.
Kayla has been unable to return to her work as a psychotherapist in private practice and she will likely not be able to return until sometime in 2021. As foster, then adoptive parents, of special needs children for many years, Marjorie has been a stay at home parent. They have been supported by Kayla's income until her last day of work on April 2nd. As someone who is self employed she has no sick leave, disability, or paid time off of any kind. Their savings are now nearly exhausted from basic expenses, let alone the overwhelming medical bills that are coming in for the first 3 month hospitalization. There are also expected additional bills from the latter hospitalizations and many outpatient doctors appointments.
Kayla is unable to walk more than a few feet and is working hard with her therapists and in home nursing care to gain mobility. She had to purchase a mobility scooter out of pocket, which was an unexpected cost, but necessary for getting to her many follow-up appointments. Marjorie will be searching for a job when Kayla is able to be left alone, although when that can happen is unclear.
2020 has been a difficult year for all of us, but for the Fullers, it has been devastating in multiple ways. In January, their 14 year old daughter went missing and when found was discovered to have suffered significant trauma. She has been in various treatment facilities since then. The Fullers were already experiencing trauma and grief when Covid hit the family.
