The Black Bookstore Documentary | Official Teaser

We are Sadiq Ali and Karim Ali, co-directors, co-producers, and visionaries behind the first-ever feature documentary on the history of one of the most important culturally affirming spaces, the Black bookstore. If you’re here, it means you believe—like we do—in the power of story, memory, and community. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about this project and the journey ahead.

In short, we’re asking for your support to help bring this essential film to life!

To date, we’ve successfully raised over $50,000 in development and pre-production funding through grants and early crowdfunding. Now, we’re turning to the most powerful and engaged community in the country—those who love, defend, and understand the sacred role of the Black bookstore—to help us raise an additional $50,000 for production.
These funds will allow us to fully enter production in 2026 and prepare the film for a 2027 premiere.

This documentary tells the untold story of the Black bookstore as a vital institution in America—and especially for Black America. These stores were more than retail spaces. They were sanctuaries and strategy rooms. Portals for imagination and identity. Homes for freedom dreams.

For me, Sadiq, this journey has been deeply personal. My late Baba (father), Hodari Ali, founded Pyramid Bookstores, a beloved and influential Black bookstore chain based in Washington, DC. I grew up inside those walls—raised by books, elders, organizers, artists, and community. But as we began shaping this film, it became clear that his story was not singular, but rather he was part of a much larger, national movement.

This film tells the story of that movement.

We trace how Black bookstores shaped generations of readers, thinkers, and leaders—and how systems of power worked to surveil, undermine, and silence them. Through interviews with bookstore owners, cultural leaders, writers, and everyday people, we explore both the rise and erosion of these sacred spaces, including the little-known efforts by the FBI to disrupt their work.

But this film is not only about what was lost. It’s about what can be reclaimed, and what the new renaissance and reimagining of these spaces will mean now and into the future.

We are making this film with love, with urgency, and with the community at the center. This story deserves to be told—and we believe the most honest and powerful way to tell it is together. Your support helps us reach the people, places, and histories still waiting to be heard.

This is not just our story. It’s your story too!

Let’s bring it to the screen—and to the world!

How Will We Use Your Funds?

Your support directly powers the next phase of this film—helping us move fully into production and capture the stories, voices, and history that make the Black bookstore such a vital institution. Every dollar raised goes toward ensuring this documentary is made with care, integrity, and cinematic excellence.

Your contributions will support:

  • Production & Filming – Principal photography across multiple cities, including interviews with bookstore owners, authors, historians, and community elders.
  • Crew & Equipment – Fair compensation for our predominantly Black and allied production team, along with professional camera, sound, and lighting equipment.
  • Travel & Logistics – Transportation, lodging, and location costs necessary to document bookstores and archives around the country.
  • Archival Materials – Licensing historic photos, footage, and documents that help tell this story accurately and powerfully.
  • Post-Production Preparation – Early editing, sound organization, and workflow setup to ensure a strong and efficient post-production phase.

By contributing, you’re not just funding a film—you’re helping preserve history—our history—uplift living legacies, and ensure this story reaches audiences who need it most.
