We are raising funds on behalf of the Figueroa family, who are facing overwhelming challenges as they care for their daughter, Sonia. This journey has been marked by unimaginable hardship, including the heartbreaking loss of Sonia's twin sister, Sendy, in March 2021 to the same devastating condition: MELAS.

**What is MELAS?**

MELAS stands for Mitochondrial Encephalopathy, Lactic Acidosis, and Stroke-like episodes. It is a rare and severe disease that affects multiple organs, causing a wide range of symptoms, from stroke-like episodes and dementia to epilepsy, lactic acidosis, myopathy, and more. For Sonia, this means countless hospital visits and treatments as she fights bravely against this relentless illness.

**An Additional Struggle: Dianna’s Health**

In December of 2023, the Figueroa family suffered another blow when Dianna, Sonia's mother, suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm. This unexpected medical emergency has added even more stress and financial strain on the family, as they now face the daunting task of managing both Sonia's ongoing care and Dianna's recovery.
