Hello Everyone, My name is Candise, I am the oldest daughter of Michael Wright.
On November 19, 2024 my dad was admitted to the ICU in Norfolk, Ne where he was diagnosed as being in Septic shock. During his 5 day stay in the ICU, doctors discovered that his gallbladder was infected and needed to be removed. They also found a large mass on his right kidney and some "suspicious" looking spots in the lungs.
While in the hospital in Norfolk dad received 9 rounds of high dose antibiotics and drain tube was placed in the gallbladder in an attempt to mitigate the serious infection that was over taking his body.
At that time dad was referred to UNMC in Omaha Nebraska in order to address the mass on the kidney. After several appointments and trips back and forth to Omaha meeting with specialists, many scans and blood work it was decided that on March 4, 2025 dad would have surgery to remove the gallbladder, remove the right kidney and repair a pre-existing hernia. Dad was in surgery for about 7 hours, after which he was released to go home to recuperate. Unfortunately there were some complications with the large incision and dad ended up back in the ER in Norfolk Nebraska March 21, 2025 with some large blood clots under the wound, which led us to another appointment in Omaha to remove the clots to insure proper healing.
On April 3, 2025 dad was back to UNMC for a PET scan and some more blood work. Now to focus on the "suspicious" spots on the lungs. About a week later, back in Omaha, Dad was diagnosed with Level 4 Clear Cell Renal cancer which has metastasis into the lungs. The scans from November 2024 measured the mass in the right lung at 2.5 cm at the time of the PET scan the mass on the right lung has grown to 11.6 cm. What we have learned is that this cancer is tricky and mimics healthy cells so his body doesn't know what to fight! This cancer is quite aggressive and it is a cancer that, at this time, cannot be cured! However, if you know my dad, he is STUBBORN! He is also a fighter and the strongest man I know! And so, on my birthday I went with my dad to his first cancer treatment!
On May 6, 2025, dad started Immunotherapy infusions. This treatment is life long and he will have to continue these infusions every 3-4 weeks for the rest of his life. This also means extra trips to UNMC for blood work and scans to check progress and adjust the plan as needed for the greatest benefit to dad!
Unfortunately, this also means that along with all the travel back and forth to Omaha and the added extra expense for new medications and treatments to keep dad healthy. He is also missing work, which for dad is the hardest part!! Dad has been basically unable to work since November of last year. Thankfully for his sanity he has been able to haul a few short distance load over the past few weeks! According to dad, Truck Driver Extrodanaire, the short haul dont pay the bills!! ❤️
So because of all of this I'm reaching out to friends and family and the world!
My dad, the hardest working, strongest man I know has to take a break and focus on his health!
Please help if you can! We know times are hard for everyone right now and appreciate each and every one of you. If you made it this far, we thank you!
Please share!!!
