Support the family farm

Dear friends and family,

As you may have heard, a devastating ‘derecho’ storm hit Iowa hard on Monday afternoon. Winds were clocked at over 100 miles per hour and even though the storm only lasted a short time, it had lasting effects.

The Parsons-Olson family farm was hit catastrophically, and we could use your help. Whether that be financially through this GoFundMe page, or in your thoughts and prayers.

Our 100-year-old barn (that we thought could withstand anything) was completely flattened. Unfortunately, we lost a pregnant llama, several goats, and a few chickens in the destruction. One of the miniature horses was trapped in the rubble as were the remaining goats and llamas. Thankfully, they are all safe now and staying at a neighbor’s farm for the time being. The outbuildings were either completely or nearly completely destroyed. Large portions of fence are gone. Several vehicles were damaged. Huge trees are uprooted, and the garden and orchard are demolished.

The house suffered damage with windows smashed, water damage, holes in the ceiling, roof damage, sections of siding are gone, gutters ruined, and more.
Most of the county is out of power, power lines are down everywhere.
Generators had to be brought in from out of state.
There is too much loss to mention.

While our farm holds many special memories for our family, it is also a welcoming home for our community, school, and church. It is a gathering place for barn parties, school and church events, and more. Parsons-Olson’s blood, sweat, and tears have poured into making the farm a special haven where family, friends, neighbors, and strangers can all come to enjoy the critters, country charm, fun times, and love.

Neighbors, family, and friends have been extremely helpful with taking care of animals and cleaning up debris, trees, and other wreckage. We are so grateful to everyone who has and continues to help.

While insurance will cover a good portion of the damage, it won’t cover everything. As you can imagine, the expenses of rebuilding a farm can really add up. Our mom (Julie) and Loren give endlessly to others and now is our chance to help them. We ask that you please help support the Parsons-Olson family in any way you can - big or small, financially or otherwise. Your love and prayers are much appreciated.
