Once Upon a Time in Appalachia...

In the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, there is a weird and wonderful little town by a river. In that town there is a weird and wonderful little shop. It is a magical shop, an extraordinary emporium squeezed into a single cozy room. It sells a little bit of everything and there's a little something for everyone. The hand-painted sign over the door reads Creative Procrastinations & Whimsical Necessities, but everyone just calls it The Fairy Store.

In The Fairy Store are friendly happy people who never glare at you for just looking. They never say 'don't touch that.' Instead, they say 'we don't mind careful touching.' They ask how you are doing and they really care about the answer. They want to see pictures of your cat, your dog, your grandchild, or the really neat thing you made.

Why is it called The Fairy Store, you ask? Well, that's because the owner is a fairy, of course. All the local kids know that. Also it's much easier to remember than Creative Procrastinations & Whimsical Necessities, also, it's shorter.

The Fairy Lady has twice produced The Shepherdstown Fairy Festival, bringing together music, magic, and laughter for the community. If the fairy luck is in, she will, one day, do it all over again. But right now, The Fairy Shop needs help.

Hey there! It's me. I'm the Fairy Lady, owner of Creative Procrastinations & Whimsical Necessities and creator of The Shepherdstown Fairy Festival.

It's time, for a moment, to step out of the story and speak more directly.

I love The Fairy Shop. I love being The Fairy Lady. I love the gasps of surprise and squees of laughter as people discover the whimsical items I sell. I love watching our local kids grow up, and now, watching their kids grow up. I love the varied conversations that happen in the shop. I love the friendships I've formed with customers.

I dream about taking the next step and making The Fairy Shop more than just a place to buy fun things. I can't. Without help, the continued survival of Creative Procrastinations and Whimsical Necessities beyond 2026 is unlikely.

There's an old saying, 'Do what you love, and you'll never work a day in your life.' These days, we know that the truth is more like 'Do what you love and you'll work super hard for six to seven (go ahead and do the thing. I know you're thinking it.) days a week all year long without ever having a break.' And yet, I still love what I do.

I love creating a welcoming space where people can browse, have fun, be inspired, feel safe, smile, laugh, dream, make new friends, and perhaps have a better day than they might have otherwise. As I always say, as long as people smile or laugh when they are in the shop, that is enough.

In fairy tales, that would truly be payment enough. But we aren't in a fairy tale, and The Fairy Shop needs to raise $12,000.

How did we get so far behind?

It all began with the 2024 Fairy Festival.

I took a huge risk going forward with producing the festival. Sales were already down that Summer and my safety net was small, but I looked around and could see that folks needed the celebration and the whimsy. So many people had been eagerly asking about the next Shepherdstown Fairy Festival. I decided to take the risk and hope the numbers would pan out. They didn't.

People had a wonderful time, the event brought visitors and a flush of money to our local Main Street economy but it left me in a very deep financial hole. People suggested then that I ask for help, but I didn't want to tarnish the fun of the Festival.
We were almost to the holiday shopping season and I was hopeful that I could recover on my own.

Unfortunately, the 2024 holiday season didn't bring the revenue I had hoped for.

Then in 2025, the tariffs happened, and like many small business owners, I saw my finances hit from all sides as my product costs increased and my customers had less money to spend on fun.

My Spring show performed far below what was expected even factoring for the economic downturn.

Now we are all facing increased fuel costs that will further cut into my customers' travel budgets and Summer fun money.

I can't ignore the numbers. There is no way to catch up. I'm just barely keeping my head above water. I would not come to you if there was another way to solve this problem. After trying that other way for 2 years, I must ask for help.

What will I do with the donations from this fundraiser?

I never want my customers to feel pressed to buy more than they need or want or can afford. I never want to trick someone to spend more just to fill my pockets.

This money will go directly to paying the debts that originated with the 2024 Fairy Festival, allowing me to get back on a level playing field. This money will allow the Fairy Shop to survive.

If we can raise enough money, it will allow me to take a step back from certain day-to-day tasks and give me time and energy to invest in community events, like relaunching the Fairy Tea Parties, The Tiara Club, offering workshops, and doing other community support that doesn't involve selling magical treasures.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. (I wrote it myself with absolutely no help from AI, but I am going to let it make up the title)

I know so many people are struggling right now, so please, if this isn't in your budget, I understand. You can help The Fairy Shop by sharing this campaign and helping to spread the word.

With all my love,
The Fairy Lady (Emma)
