Support the Elijah Jay Hernandez Memorial Scholarship

Hello, my name is Missey Hernandez, and I’m honored to share the purpose of this fundraiser—the Elijah Jay Hernandez Memorial Scholarship.

This scholarship was created to celebrate and carry forward the legacy of our beloved son, Elijah, who tragically passed away on July 23, 2023, at just 19 years old. Elijah was a bright light at Rio Mesa High School and in our community—a gifted athlete, devoted student, passionate volunteer, natural leader, and loyal friend.

Three years ago, Elijah was the recipient of several local scholarships. After that experience, he was deeply moved by the generosity of others. He told me that once he started his career, he wanted to give back by creating a scholarship for Rio Mesa students, just like the one he had received. Though his life was cut far too short, our family is committed to honoring his dream and sharing his spirit of kindness and giving.

Last year, we were proud to award one $1,000 scholarship to help a student begin their college journey. This year, our goal is to award at least three scholarships. We currently have enough funding for one recipient and are working hard to raise more.

The Elijah Jay Hernandez Memorial Scholarship is awarded to Rio Mesa High School student-athletes who plan to attend a two-year college or four-year university. It honors students who show exceptional sportsmanship, leadership, and character—those who are recognized by coaches and peers as dedicated teammates and people of integrity, both on and off the field.
