On Sunday night, during Tropical Storm Chantal, Morgan Creek rose higher and faster than ever before, flooding the entire first floor of my parents’ home, where they’ve lived for over 30 years. They were out of town at the time, and they watched helplessly on the pet camera as water rushed in and their dog Sky ran upstairs, out of reach of neighbors and sitters. When they returned, Sky was traumatized but safe, and the damage was devastating—the floors were soaked, the HVAC system was destroyed, and their cars were clearly totaled.
We've been overwhelmed by the kindness of friends, family, and local volunteer groups who have already shown up to help in person—thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Many others have reached out asking how they can support from afar, which is why I’ve set up this GoFundMe. Unfortunately, their home insurance does not cover flood damage, so they’re facing the cost of cleanup, restoration, and rebuilding on their own. The total damage is estimated anywhere between $80,000–$100,000, far beyond what me or my family can contribute financially. We’re doing everything we can ourselves to restore and rebuild, but they could use any extra help along the way.
Right now, we’re asking for help with their immediate needs: the $5,000 needed for auto repairs and the car insurance deductible, and the $18,000 needed for a functioning HVAC.
These weren’t fancy or new cars — they were older, well-worn vehicles that helped my family get to school, work, and keep our family restaurant running. My parents are also the owners of beloved local institution, Capt. John’s Dockside, which has been serving the Chapel Hill community for over 25 years. They are senior citizens still working full-time to keep the family restaurant open, which has already been struggling since Covid. Without working transportation, it’s incredibly difficult for them to get to work — and for my brother to get to school in Durham, where he's studying to become a nurse.
We know there are many families struggling right now, and we’re so thankful for the support we’ve already received. We honestly weren’t sure what goal to set for this fundraiser because truly anything helps. If you’re able to contribute any amount or share this fundraiser, it would go directly toward helping them recover a few small, but crucial, pieces of their daily lives.
Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity!
