As most of you know, on December 25, 2024, upon returning from winter vacation in St. Thomas, United States’ Virgin Island, Carlos Della Valle was detained by Customs and Border Protection at the airport.

With the help of many of your letters those days he was detained after Christmas, your prayers, the public defender office in St. Thomas and immigration lawyer Attorney Warren Williams, Carlos was able to be released on bail, and come home to Chester County to continue working as he awaited his federal trial in St. Thomas for the charge of illegal re-entry. On Tuesday, August 12, Carlos was acquitted of this charge, surrounded by 18 family, friends, and neighbors who flew to St. Thomas from different places across the country to support him in person. That physical presence of so many made a huge impression on the person he is today.

No matter what happens, Carlos, Angela and Alessandro are eternally grateful for the generosity of hundreds of their family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors who have written letters of support, provided constant prayers, and check-ins of encouragement.

The singular goal of this family is to stay together and give Carlos the freedom to continue working and providing for his family, and contributing to the United States, the country he readily acknowledges has given him opportunities that Mexico could not.

Despite living in Chester County since 1997, and being married to Angela Della Valle, for over 23 years, Carlos and Angela have not been able to legalize his status due to the law Congress passed, called the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigration Responsibility Act of 1996 (IIRIRA) making illegal re-entry a federal crime. There has been no pathway for Carlos to qualify for any pathway to legalization; Carlos and Angela have consulted over 30 lawyers across five states.

It was as a 20 year old in Mexico, trying to escape the poverty, violence, and lack of employment opportunities, Carlos had no knowledge that his re-entry after deportation would result in such a harsh penalty– which includes an immediate 10 year ban that has to be served outside of the country.

Carlos and Angela met in 1998 when Angela was giving adult English classes at the Chester County OIC in West Chester. They remained friends after Carlos learned English, but later fell in love, and got married in 2002. Their son Alessandro was later born in 2005. Carlos and Angela, from the time they were first married until the present, have sought out counsel from over 30 lawyers during the course of their marriage from five different states. All the immigration lawyers advised to just be patient and wait for immigration reform that has never come. Having always been employed at the same company since 2000 where he has been promoted to plant manager, paying his taxes, never using any government benefits, learning English, getting his GED, being an amazing husband, father, friend and community member– none of these factors change his status or have provided a pathway to legalization.

Carlos and Angela have always hesitated to ask for financial help, as they have managed to work and provide for their family. However, with Carlos’ likely detainment or deportation, the family will lose his income, and Angela will be forced to miss days at school to advocate for him, and work closely with their immigration attorney to pursue every possible legal path to secure his status.

Carlos and Angela have also been clear with their son Alessandro, a junior at the University of Pittsburgh, that he must return to school in the fall regardless of the challenges they face.

Now, as the case moves from the criminal courts to the immigration system, the uncertainty surrounding his situation is immense. With immediate deportation from St. Thomas by ICE a strong possibility, or transfers to other detention facilities anywhere within U.S. territories also possible, the Della Valle family is striving to prepare for every scenario.

This GoFundMe has been created to help the Della Valle family cover legal fees, loss of income, and to continue supporting Alessandro in college as they navigate this incredibly difficult time. Carlos, Angela, and Alessandro are deeply grateful for the love and support they have received so far, and they are not giving up hope. Their only wish is to stay together and continue building the life they’ve worked so hard for.

Please consider donating to help with legal fees. No amount is too small.

Any unused money left in this GoFundMe will be donated to the Lord’s Pantry in Downingtown and Upper Merion Community Cupboard in King of Prussia.
