Two summers ago I dropped off a few copies of Data Visualization for People of All Ages in my neighborhood's sidewalk library, and they flew off the shelves. I put in a few more in a few other locations— poof, they were gone the next day, too.
People are clearly interested in learning about data visualization, but interest doesn't always convert into seeking and buying a resource on something, especially if you don't know what's available. And to me, that friction is ultimately a matter of access. This got me thinking: what if we could provide the same access to data visualization literacy in neighborhoods across the country, or even across the globe?
This project aims to do exactly that by sending bundles of Data Vis for People of All Ages to volunteer "book fairies" in different locations so that they can sprinkle the books across their own neighborhoods via the Little Free Library system. Each book is being purchased at cost (aka, no royalties for me) for $20.97, meaning that each bundle needs a little over $200 to supply a neighborhood. The project will remain open as long as there is interest!
It's silly, it's wholesome, and it's all about giving our communities access to visualization resources on their terms. Please consider chipping in if you are interested and able.
Thank you!
