On the Washington coast, a routine day on the water turned into every fisherman’s worst nightmare. The Abby C, a hardworking local fishing vessel, suddenly began taking on water and went down in the cold Pacific Ocean. In those terrifying moments, four crewmembers fought for their lives against relentless waves, freezing temperatures, and the darkness of the open sea. By pure miracle — and thanks to the bravery of another fishing crew — these four men survived. The crew of the Lady Nancy spotted two fishermen drifting in a life raft and two more clinging to a survival suit. One of the Abby C crew was unconscious and moments away from slipping beneath the surface forever. Without hesitation, a Lady Nancy deckhand dove into the ocean wearing only a survival suit, risking his own life to pull the unconscious man to safety. The crew immediately began CPR — and against all odds — he came back. The Coast Guard later called the rescue “nothing short of miraculous.” And it truly was. But while these men made it home alive, their nightmare isn’t over. The Abby C is gone. Their gear is gone. Their income is gone. And the physical and emotional toll of surviving a sinking at sea is something no fisherman prepares for. This was the Abby C’s first year out on the water with a proud new owner and crew. These hardworking men spent months preparing for this trip, depending on this crabbing season as their main source of income to support their families. Now, the owner cannot pay his crew or himself, leaving all of their families without income or support.
