The Cox Family
David was first diagnosed with Rhabdomyolysis in February and went into kidney failure. Rhabdomyolysis is the breakdown of muscle tissue that leads to the release of muscle fiber contents into the blood. These substances are harmful to the kidney and often cause kidney damage. He was just recently diagnosed with this condition again and was hospitalized for a week. The doctors do not understand what is causing this dangerous condition and are referring him to UVA. A muscle biopsy was done last week and the results could take a few weeks. Doctors feel that he could have a form of muscular dystrophy or some type of autoimmune disease. At this point there are a lot of unknowns. We are unsure when or if David will be able to return to active duty at the fire station and he is out of sick time therefore will not be receiving pay. No one loves their job more than David and he is deeply saddened and scared but still hoping for the best. He has devoted the last 20 plus years helping people and loves everyone. David has served on the Altavista lifesaving crew for years and is now a current volunteer with Altavista Fire department.
Bess has had two major ankle surgeries in the past year and is now facing a third at Duke and will be out of work as well on reduced pay.
We all love Bess and David and want to help support them anyway that we can. These are some very hard times for them and still praying for answers for David soon. Every trip to UVA, ER, doctors visits, Duke are very expensive as we all are very aware so if you can contribute thank you so much..if you would like to help in other ways that is great as well. We have a great network of friends to support each other in these rough times, lets pull together to help our family/friend out.
