Seven relay teams from CAH consisting of Obstetricians, GPs, Maternity Managers, Gynae Specialist Nurses, Sisters, Midwives and Maternity Support Workers are competing in the Belfast City Marathon for the Children’s Heartbeat Trust.

The Children’s Heartbeat Trust are a charity based in Northern Ireland whose work helps children and young people with heart disease, and their families, live full and empowered lives. They provide emotional and financial support for families throughout pregnancy, subsequent surgeries and provide help with travel and information on living with CHD. They also have a bereavement service which sadly provides essential support services for families affected by CHD in children and young people.

As healthcare workers we have experience of caring for babies and children with CHD in a professional capacity but many of us have personal experience of this disease. My nephew Senan was born with CHD and had open heart surgery when he was 4 days old and is now waiting for a second surgery in the next few months. The charity’s support has been invaluable in providing support for my family and for many families across NI.
