On October 4, 2025, tragedy struck our community in the most unexpected way. A devastating car wreck claimed Sargeant Jerrold Wesley Carter's life, leaving behind his wife, two children, and family away from home at Mize Automotive.
In an instant, his wife was widowed, their children lost their father, our repair shop lost its spark, and our community lost a beloved man and twenty year veteran of the U.S. Army. His family is now facing great financial uncertainty while grieving this tragic loss.
As a long-time veteran, the military has survivor's benefits which may be able to aid his family in this situation. While the benefits may help in time, it is unknown whether his wife qualifies for any military aid, as it has its application processes. It will take longer to receive compensation than his wife has to make arrangements and continue meeting their monthly bill payments including their mortgage. His wife also served in the U.S. Navy as a medic, though, does not receive a pension. Their household income was solely provided by Sargeant Carter with his pension and employment at Mize's. We're establishing this fundraiser to help provide both immediate relief and long-term stability for Sargeant Carter's wife and family.
All funds raised will directly benefit Sargeant Carter's wife and family. Mize Automotive will act as a steward for all donations and will ensure that every dollar is distributed appropriately to his family on their behalf.
Sargeant Jerrold Carter has always been of service to our community, with many in Henry County devastated, and to all Americans as a veteran.
Donations will be used to cover:
Funeral and burial expenses for Sargeant Jerrold Carter
Short and long-term living expenses as they adjust to a new life after loss
Loss of a vehicle
Counseling for grief
The family at Mize Automotive stand with the Carter family and those grieving his loss within the community. This is a time for all of us to show the power we have in our unity.
Every contribution — no matter the size — makes an impact. If you're unable to donate, please give thought to sharing this campaign to help us reach as many people as possible.
Thank you for your generosity, prayers, and compassion during this heartbreaking time.
With gratitude,
Mize Automotive in Collinsville, Virginia
on behalf of the Carter Family
