Memorial Service Reminder + Details:

Hello friends and family,
We look forward to celebrating Brian with you all this coming Friday, June 19 from 5pm-8pm at the Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland (4499 Piedmont Ave, Oakland, CA 94611). The service will begin at 5:30. There is only a small parking lot at the location, so you’ll want to give yourself enough time to find parking in the surrounding neighborhood if needed, and get settled by then.

The family has asked that the dress code be celebratory: Brian-coded, colorful, and casual or… wear your favorite band shirt!

There will be appetizers and refreshments after the service.

A reminder that in lieu of flowers to donate to:

Thursday, May 21, 2026 Update:

Dearest friends,

We wanted to let you know that Brian passed away peacefully last night in his sleep. So much gratitude to everyone who came to see him in the last week, over the weekend, and all throughout the past months. The amount of friends and family who showed up and supported the Caraways is a true testament to how loved they are and always will be.

We will post more about how to support Alice and Owen in this next phase, along with information about his memorial, in the coming days.

Until then send your love to Alice and Owen and hold one another close.

With great care,
Brian's friends and family

May 14, 2026 Update:

Dear friends and loved ones,

It is with deep care that we are sharing this update.

Despite Brian fighting extremely hard over the last few months (we all know he never gives up), his condition has continued to decline and he has recently been given a prognosis of days to weeks. In the coming days he will be coming home from the hospital to begin home hospice care, so he can transition surrounded by family, friends, and love.

In this time, we will celebrate Brian while he is here with us. If you can, come visit (more on that below) and shower him with love and admiration, laughter, art, music, flowers, milkshakes, and by holding him—and each other—close.

We are sending so much love out to all of you who love Brian and know what an open-hearted, generous, talented, hilarious, and radiant LIGHT he is in this world.

We intend to send him onward with as much gusto as he has lived his life.

Thankfully, he has a community that knows exactly how to do that.

We are extending the GoFundMe to help cover hospice care, memorial expenses, and to support Alice and Owen through this next chapter and year ahead.

Visiting: The family has asked for no visitors today, Thursday, May 14, but please sign up starting again tomorrow. More than one person / family can sign up per cell. There will be places for overflow and being together. If you were signed up or want to sign up to visit in the next few days, please check in with Alice to confirm location. The sign up sheet will also be updated as we shift into home care over the next few days, and has more information about logistics and meals.

General Help: If you’d like to help in the coming weeks with food, flowers, meaningful activities, logistics, cleaning, or anything else, text Tavia (check visitor accommodations tab linked below if you need her number).

Accommodations: If you are coming from out of town and have or need a place to stay or you have a place where folks can stay, use this tab of the sheet or text Tavia.

Photos: If you have photos of Brian, upload them here.

We'd also love to share this grief resource list that has a great one sheet on supporting grieving families.

Thank you all for loving Brian so deeply.

With love,
The Caraways Biggest Fans

------

We've created this page to help support the Caraways in a time of need, as Brian is fighting through serious health issues that are forcing both Brian and Alice to miss work and have brought on mounting medical bills. It is a particularly challenging time for them, their families, and friends especially in light of Owen’s recent battle and ongoing recovery with cancer.

In addition to being a friend to most folks who will be reading this, Brian is also a painter, sculptor, musician, father, and husband who has always been selfless in his support of others.

Since November, Brian Caraway has been struggling with acute abdominal pain that has proved hard to pin down. After seeking treatment, it was discovered that Brian has a large tumor on his pancreas, specifically, a rare neuroendocrine pancreatic tumor (carcinoid) as well as a number of lesions and nodules on his liver, which have started to impact his liver function. The full diagnosis is still not totally known, as more tissue samples are being collected and tests are being run, but Brian has been facing increasing complications from the tumors since they were first spotted. This has led to an initial treatment plan that includes targeted chemotherapy and pain management. Overall, the diagnosis and treatment have been complicated and challenging which has impacted Brian’s ability to work and has also caused Alice to miss work in order to support Brian with his doctor visits, chemotherapy infusions, and ER visits. The medical bills beyond insurance and the missed work for both Brian and Alice have become an additional layer of financial stress that doesn’t appear to be tapering off any time soon on top of an already emotionally stressful situation.

This is where you come in! We know how loved the whole Caraway family is, and we are hoping that you, their amazing community, can help Brian and Alice in this moment of need by easing this layer of financial stress that sits on top of it all. Please pitch in what you can to help the Caraways fight through another battle!

Other ways you can help:
We decided to combine the meal train and visiting schedule into one sheet for ease. If you already signed up via meal train, we've added you to the sheet. If you want to visit, add your name, number, and then text before you come to see if it's still a good time and if they need anything. They have requested to slow the meals down to Sunday, Weds, Friday, but you can always ask if you happen to be coming by.

Stay connected to Brian and Alice during this time and get the latest updates on Brian's condition on Caring Bridge. We will post updates here too, but probably not as frequently.
