Friends and lovers of Ben and Grant Cameron-Cartwright.
As many of you know, our dear boys have been on a journey to adopt a child for over a year now.
On August 6th, they received a call from their attorney that a baby boy had been born in Huntsville, Alabama.
In 2 hours they packed up their lives (including Barrel-Sparkle the Bernedoodle), rented a car and drove 16.5 hours - Cyndi Lauper, Celine Dion or Roy Orbison (you choose) style - through the night to get to their son.
The WONDERFUL news- at journeys end they found their beautiful and perfectly healthy little boy. Love is radiating through them all right now! They have named him OLLY! OIly Hadrian Cameron-Cartwright (how’s that for a snappy superstar name?).
After many twists and turns, paperwork, lawyers, lawyers and more lawyers, they have been granted legal custody of Olly while moving through the adoption process. A process that has blown out to 10 weeks as opposed to the 10 days they were advised to budget for.
Now for the CHALLENGING part, and where we come in...
Because of the unique and surprising ("clusterf**ck" to quote their lawyer) circumstances surrounding Olly’s adoption plan, they are up against a lot of hoops to jump through before they can take Olly home to NY.
Grant and Ben will share details when they're ready - but what we know is that they are not able to leave Alabama until a court case scheduled for mid-October at the earliest.
Make no mistake, our boys were prepared in every way for their adoption journey, but they are, as I write, $30,000 and climbing, over a budget usual for prospective adoptive parents.
I want Ben and Grant to focus on Olly, on the legal stuff and looking after each other.
I want to help them with cash to cover their living costs in a far away town, and I know that many of you, if you can, will too.
Here's the crux of it:
* This adoption involves Alabama DHR (Department of Human Resources), ICPC (Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children) and a Native American Tribe to navigate - all unforeseen and all adding very lengthy time to the process.
* At least 10 weeks of hotel and AirBnB stays, rental car expenses and extra legal costs is very different to 10 days, especially so far away from home and other support structures one could usually rely on.
* They've had to employ 3 additional attorneys (outside of their 2 NY attorneys) to cover all the constantly changing aspects and departments involved in this particular case.
* To top it all off, in order to stay in state, Grant also had to give up a super lucrative job in upstate New York for August and September.
Their spirits are high, yet their stress and anxiety is real. Jo-Lo was wrong, and in this case, love DOES cost a thing.
They are completely confident that all will work out perfectly and they'll be able to travel back to NYC with Olly in October, but the struggle and waiting game is real until they get there.
We know how much you love and cherish the Cameron-Cartwright family and this journey of theirs, and you are invited to offer support towards the mounting unexpected and unbudgeted costs of their journey.
If you are in a position to donate a little love and support I know it would mean the world to them and of course to little Olly!
P.S. Apparently Huntsville, Al, has the highest concentration of PhDs in the USA. It's referred to as the Rocket City and if Olly decides to not take after his two Dads, we may have a PhD wielding astronaut on our hands! The future's so bright with Olly in the world!
