My name is Kara Sullivan and I've been a professional casting director in Los Angeles for over twenty years. After decades of helping directors to bring their visions to life, I've decided that it's time to tell my own story. This year I'll be directing my first short film, The Callback, which is inspired by true events.

A LABOR OF LOVE

A deeply personal story, The Callback is based on my complicated relationship with my father, who passed away in 2009. While based on my own life, the plot explores universal themes of grief, forgiveness, and healing. My hope this that other people who may have experienced similar circumstances will be able to relate and find inspiration through my story.

Throughout my career, I've been privileged to build relationships with exceptional artists from all parts of the film industry. This project allows me the opportunity to bring together the varied talents of producers, directors, writers, actors, and crew who have worked with me throughout the years.

We are seeking a total of $35,000 to cover our production costs. Any additional funds raised will go towards the cost of post-production, marketing, and festival submission fees.

LOGLINE

An up-and-coming casting director must confront her troubled relationship with her ailing father as a callback audition blurs the lines between art and reality, bringing her face-to-face with the ghosts of her past.

THE STORY

Kathleen, a rising casting director, returns to New Zealand when her estranged father’s health declines, forcing her to confront years of emotional distance and unresolved pain.

Back in Los Angeles, she throws herself into directing her first film, an autobiographical story inspired by their relationship. During a callback audition, memories surface through flashbacks, revealing the deep rift between father and daughter and the toll of his absence and secrecy.

When Kathleen learns of her father’s passing, she rewrites the film’s ending, imagining the closure he never gave her in life, an act that begins her path toward healing.
