The Blackburn family has just suffered catastrophic damage to their home in Tampa as a result of Hurricane Helene. Four feet of water flooded the entire first floor of the home—the vast majority of which cannot be salvaged. Sewage is unfortunately also a factor. The exterior of the home and the roof are significantly damaged, as well as two cars destroyed. Imagine walking around your flooded home in shock with no electricity and no A/C in the high humidity of Tampa. Right now, they are living in a hotel.
If you know Candace and Matt, you know that they are as kindhearted and generous as any couple could be. Candace told me last night that she's worried about filing for FEMA benefits because it may take them away from someone else less fortunate. I am not kidding. A few months ago, they moved into their home two other family members in need—one of whom is elderly and has a disability. Those family members are also living in an adjoining hotel room.
There is no telling how long it will be—if ever—that the six of them can resume living in their home. As is the case with any natural disaster, first responders, water mitigation, and home insurance companies are all overwhelmed and not able to address immediate needs. The Blackburns need to be able to leverage funds quickly to care for their family in the interim.
Please consider donating whatever you are able to help the Blackburn family. It's just one way to show that you care from afar. But let's be honest, we all know that Candace and Matt would be there for us if the situation was reversed.
P.S. According to GoFundMe rules, I must state who I am, where I'm from, the relationship to the parties and how the funds will be spent. So: Amber Northern; Glen Allen, VA; friend; living expenses.
