The “BERT” Scholarship for Bravery, Endurance, Resilience, and Toughness
In Loving Memory of Brian Donald Tolbert
Kenwood High School, Class of 1997
The BERT Scholarship for Bravery, Endurance, Resilience, and Toughness was established in loving memory of Brian “Bert” Tolbert, a proud alumnus of Kenwood High School’s Class of 1997. Brian lived with a very rare genetic condition, oculodentodigital dysplasia—a neurodegenerative disorder affecting multiple parts of the body, including the eyes, teeth, and fingers. Despite facing extraordinary physical challenges and spending many years wheelchair-bound or bedridden, Brian approached life with remarkable optimism, humor, and grace.
Those who knew Brian remember his unwavering positivity, his sharp wit, and his ability to make others laugh even in the most difficult circumstances. He was deeply loved by a wide circle of friends and family, and his enthusiasm for the Baltimore Ravens and Baltimore Orioles was legendary—every victory punctuated with his signature phrase, “BOOK IT.”
Brian lived with perseverance and purpose, finding joy in time spent with his large family, especially doting on his nieces and nephews, and maintaining strong ties to the Kenwood community. In every relationship, he demonstrated integrity, generosity, and kindness, firmly believing that these values defined how one should live, regardless of the struggles they face.
This scholarship was created to honor Brian’s enduring belief in resilience and character, and to ensure that his legacy lives on through students who embody the same bravery, endurance, resilience, and toughness that defined his life. The BERT Scholarship supports students who demonstrate academic promise, financial need, and a personal history of confronting and working to overcome significant obstacles.
Each recipient carries forward the spirit of Brian Tolbert—a powerful reminder that one life, rooted in determination, compassion, and hope, can inspire and shape countless futures.
