On Friday, February 25th at 4:15 am the Audrey Apartment Complex caught fire. By 4:30 am firefighters arrived and reported visible flames and heavy smoke coming from the front-left side of the building’s first and second floors. Firefighters evacuated the entire building and made entry into the second floor; however, they confirmed the source of the fire was directly below them. Additional crews made entry into a first-floor apartment unit and were able to get water on the fire from both inside and outside of the building.
After 10 minutes on the scene, firefighters reported the first-floor ceiling and stairwell were starting to burn up through to the second floor. Firefighters were able to knock down the main body of the fire within 20 minutes on the scene and began digging out hotspots within the walls, ceiling, and void spaces. The fire was fully extinguished by 5:27 a.m.
We were told by the fire department that with firefighters escorting us we were able to retrieve immediate goods in order to maintain our livelihood. My entire apartment was covered in soot. There were no sprinkler systems in the building and no fire alarms that had gone off. We were also told that the building was inhabitable and thus we were not able to stay. This was only the beginning.
At some point Saturday morning, our building was looted. We all found out about this in the early afternoon. Upon arrival, it was clear that the property management had set up no security for the vacated building. The looters kicked open doors, ripped through windows, and even made entryways through dugout walls. Everyone was affected.
To top that all off, the management finally boarded up the building, but the next day we found our complex was looted a second time. The looters did the exact same thing plus tearing off the boards that covered up our apartments.
This has been traumatic beyond all belief. No one is hurt and everyone is safe at this point, but we are in need. We have found the building is definitely not up to code. There were no alarms were going off during the fire. Most importantly, there was no security for our vacated building.

I am grateful to be alive. Without my fellow neighbor, I could have easily been dead. Your contribution helps all of us with our current struggles. I’m hopeful that friends and others will chip in to participate in this GoFundMe campaign. This is a situation where a small pebble thrown into the pond will result in widespread ripples that make a major difference.
