Support the Asuncion Family Lahaina Home Rebuild

This is my long-time friend Kelcy and her family. The Asuncion’s have been a fixture in Lahaina since 1980. Juan and Frances, along with their two daughters, moved from Kihei to a newly built house in Lahaina where they would welcome many more members to the family through the years. Juan and Frances raised four kids, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren on the property. For 43 years, their often-crowded home was the center for their multigenerational family.
On August 8th, 2023, a wildfire overwhelmed Lahaina town, giving nearly no warning. Already without power or cell phone service and seeing fire headed their way, family members evacuated to different areas, not able to pack anything or keep in contact with one another. It wasn’t until well into the next day that they had accounted for everyone.
As things started to settle, aerial footage was posted online. They learned that much of their neighborhood was destroyed and their house was burned down to the slab. Their elementary school, bank, post office, medical offices, gas stations, hardware and grocery stores, all were no match for the blaze. All of Front Street’s shops, galleries, and restaurants were reduced to rubble. The places of countless memories and stories were wiped out of existence in a single day.
The last year has been challenging. Navigating the recovery and rebuilding process has been a full-time job. In addition to the stressors of dealing with the disaster, they were underinsured. They are still trying to get all the insurance proceeds that they paid premiums on for years. Insurance is slow to come in and what they have is not enough to rebuild.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Much Mahalo.
