Tommy Strong for Ironman for Anna

I found out about the Anna Schindler Foundation how many unfortunately do – my son was diagnosed with childhood cancer. We spent months at a time in Spokane, fearful and away from our young children. It was the lowest, most difficult point of our lives, yet through the Anna Schindler Foundation, we found hope.

Month after month, meal cards to the Sacred Heart Medical Center cafeteria appeared in our room, as well as Thomas Hammer coffee cards, grocery cards, and visits with their amazing staff. Some of the strongest people you’ll ever meet, people like Polly Schindler showed us that there’s life after a cancer diagnosis.

I race for the ironman for Anna team because it gives me focus, it gives me purpose, and it gives me strength.

During Tommy’s treatment, most things were out of my control, so I ran. The nurses and volunteers were amazing and watched Tommy so I could get outside. I wasn’t running from life, I was running to keep control of it.

Childhood cancer never really goes away. For very headache, unexplained bruise, bone ache or illness, in the back of my mind the word cancer rears its head. Childhood cancer will impact 1 out of 285 kids in the US. The Anna Schindler Foundation will be there for these families that reside in the Inland Northwest – and to them, I will forever be thankful.
