The Alvarez family has always worked hard to support themselves, but now they are facing an unimaginable challenge. Stephen Alvarez, the father, shared how his mother was diagnosed with dementia in 2015. Wanting to provide her with the best care possible, Stephen made modifications to his home so his mom could have handicap amenities and space for a caretaker. After eight months of city review, the plans were approved, and Stephen began the renovations right away. The new room included an automatic toilet, sink, and wheelchair-accessible entryways, all designed to make life easier for his mother.

Just as the modifications were nearly complete and had passed all city inspections, a neighbor with connections to the mayor and city attorney filed a lawsuit against the Alvarez family. This legal battle has lasted five years, and Stephen’s mother sadly passed away in 2023 without ever being able to use her new room. The family is now burdened with overwhelming legal and medical expenses, and the city is demanding outrageous fees and fines for permit issues and deed restrictions. Stephen and his family feel they are being discriminated against because they are Hispanic, and the judge has threatened to arrest Stephen for contempt if they do not comply.

The Alvarez family is deeply uncomfortable and embarrassed to ask for help, having always paid their way through hard work. But the cost of appeals and ongoing legal battles is overwhelming. Any support from the community is greatly appreciated to help them pay down these expenses, fight discrimination, and move forward after years of hardship. Thank you for standing with the Alvarez family in their time of need.
