Rebuilding Lives: Support the AbdulHameed Family in Gaza After Devastating Displacement

“When a house is destroyed, it happens in the blink of an eye. Everything you owned, everything you worked for your whole life – your important documents, your love letters, your books, the kitchen appliances, your photos, your most treasured things – are scattered into fragments, no longer recognisable. The meaning you once attached to these items is also fragmented and all that remains are the memories, which in time also become fragments.”
-AbdulHameed, grandfather, 65y

The AbdulHameed Family's Journey

In 2017-19, I, Annesofie Norn, collaborated on an art installation with the family in Gaza. Their stories unfolded during the reconstruction of their homes, which were destroyed in the wars of 2008 and 2014. Throughout this journey, I developed a close connection with three generations of the AbdulHameed family, experiencing their resilience, kindness, and trust as they welcomed me into their lives and shared their stories.

Over the course of a year, the AbdulHameed family documented their rebuilding process and explored what it takes to create a home when everything has been lost. They chose the theme 'Power' to narrate their own story.
Through this theme, they discussed the lack of power – with only about 2 hours of electricity a day being the norm in Gaza, even in times without wars. Simultaneously, they also delved into the human power they discovered to stay united as a family, creating hope and solutions for themselves and their community.

Since my departure from Gaza, the family has supported Barakat, the youngest son, in relocating to China to pursue his PhD degree, focusing on engineering new solutions for climate change. I am deeply moved by this family’s dedication to creating solutions for the world and their care beyond themselves, even though their basic need for safety hasn’t been met for more than a century.

Regrettably, as of Dec 04, 2023, 12 family members of the AbdulHameed family have been displaced once again. They are currently residing in a cramped room with 30 people, facing precarious conditions, a lack of safety, insufficient food, and limited water supply.

Essam, He/his, 41y
Roa, She/her, ~35y

Esha, She/her, ~35y
Raghad, She/her, 14y
Abdulhameed, He/his, 11y
Malak, She/her, 5y
Yousif, He/his, 11y

Your Support Matters: Fundraising for Immediate Needs

Barakat and I urgently seek your support to raise funds for the AbdulHameed family. The children's most critical need is a safe shelter, but secure housing is currently unavailable in Gaza. Our fundraising goal is therefor specifically aimed at covering only essential needs for survival during the next six of months.

All funds will go unrestricted to the family, apart from GoFundMe's transaction fee of 2.9% + $0.30 per donation.
Should funding exceed the goal, then additional funds will go to repairing their house.

In the exhibition catalogue and through the exhibition webpage here you can learn more about their experience of loosing everything in 2014 and the rebuilding of their home in 2018.

Even at the beginning of the agression in 2023 the family tried to maintain a normal life for the kids

Ro'a's son, Yousif, won a price in school this December for being one of the best students

Malak loves to wear pretty clothes

Abdulhameed, Nahma and Mohammed waiting for dinner

Celebrating family at the local burger shop

Suad and Abdulhameed in the garden with their grandchildren

Mohammed being proud after winning the sport competition in school

Raghad coming home after visiting friends

Barakats sister had a baby two weeks before the agression started

They came to stay with the larger AbdulHameed family in the big house, believing that this location might be more safe

After Suad's brother's house was bombed, they also came to the house. Everyone keeping still and waiting together...

As the area started to be heavily bombed the family decided to leave the house behind. Here hiding and waiting in the open...

Everyone now together in a small room, in a shed on this land
