What is the Liberia Marathon?
The Liberia Marathon is an inclusive, uplifting event, celebrating Liberia’s developing success story. As the only official road race and largest athletic event in the country, it provides a unique opportunity for Liberia’s aspiring long-distance runners and for thousands of amateur runners alike.
The race event welcomes all genders, ages and abilities and pushes for diversity and inclusion. Participants can choose between the full marathon, a half marathon, a 10K foot race, a 10k race for wheelchairs, and a 10k race for crutches.
The Liberia Marathon course is accredited by World Athletics, the international governing body for athletics and uses electronic chip-timing. The event is organized by the Liberia Marathon Trust, a Liberian nonprofit, and is built on strong partnerships with private and public stakeholders.

Why we need your support:
Organizing a quality and safe running event in Liberia requires an average expense of 35 USD per participant. While this may sound high, it is well below the average cost for a race of this standard in other parts of the world.
Yet, due to the fact that Liberia's average monthly income is about 150 USD, and in line with our mission to deliver an accessible and inclusive race, we keep our registration fee for Liberians below 10 USD. As a result, external support is critical to compensate for the funding gap.
Corporate partners support us to lay the foundation for the race, but we need YOUR SUPPORT to make it possible for EVERYONE to join. Every contribution assures that more athletes can cross the finish line.

Why is this event important?
It only takes one race to make a difference for thousands. Sports can have a huge positive impact on the physical and mental health of people and societies, creating a strong sense of belonging, promoting mutual respect and boosting self-confidence.
Yet, access to sports is not always a given. While athletes in developed nations have easier access to sport clubs and events in their chosen field, many in Liberia do not. Liberia is still ranked as one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world, and access to large-scale public sports events is extremely limited.
The Liberia Marathon offers this rare access. This event is the only opportunity for Liberian elite runners to compete locally in a long-distance race at international standard. It is also the only chance for thousands of Liberian amateur and fun runners to experience the joy of long-distance running together. That's why the Liberia Marathon matters.

Frequently Asked Questions
What will the money be used for?
All funds go directly to the organization of a safe and quality race event. The 35 USD expense per runner is composed of costs for a share of water provision, road security logistics, medical supervision and treatment on-site, electronic chip timing, prize money, medals, race numbers, trophies, security at start and finish, pre-race medical check-ups, registration drives, weekly pre-race training, course and post-race refreshment and snacks, compensation and food for 400+ volunteers, fliers, stickers, banners, signage, start and finishing arches, runner and volunteer t-shirts, porta-potties, sanitation equipment, stationery, vehicle rental, fuel expenses, aid stations, transportation for runners and volunteers, waste management costs, communication for team members, social media marketing, radio and newspaper and general printing costs.
How long has the Liberia Marathon existed?
The Liberia Marathon Trust was formed in 2010 and the first Liberia Marathon event was organized in 2011. Since then, we have held races in 2013, 2015, 2021, 2022, and 2024 based on the availability of external funding. Our goal is to host the Liberia Marathon as an annual city event, bringing together thousands of runners, volunteers and spectators.
Does the Liberia Marathon have paid staff?
No, the race is organized by a voluntary organizing committee, and the Liberia Marathon Trust is a non-profit organization overseen by a voluntary board. Our goal is to raise enough funding to install a core team of paid staff members to facilitate continued development of the race event.
Why do you keep the registration fees so low?
Liberia is still one of the poorest countries in the world. With an average income of 150 USD per month, even 10 USD registration fees are are lot of money. We believe participation in our race should not depend on the size of your wallet.
Why is the organization of the race so expensive?
People and their safety matter. The Liberia Marathon aims for world class standards in terms of logistics, security and overall experience. As the only official road race in the country, we do not benefit from scale effect, and have to accept higher expenses to ensure high quality and standards.
