Hi everyone, my name is Jenna Wilkey and I am going into my fifth year teaching middle school math in Lawrence Public Schools. Two years ago, I campaigned for my school to use an online curriculum called Desmos Amplify. This curriculum allows students to learn math through coding, games, and in the moment feedback, and is by far the best way I have found to have students excited by and confident in math. Last year, in using this curriculum, my students went from scoring in the 27th percentile to the 43rd percentile. With cuts to school funding, the math team this year will no longer have an online curriculum (we will have to make worksheets). Being in a historically underfunded school district means teachers take on many financial burdens (buying our students their binders, pencils, markers, etc.), but this one is larger than what I can do as an individual. I strongly feel that my students deserve the opportunity to use technology and programming to learn math just as much as their counterparts in the district over. Where you live, the language you speak, and the color of your skin should not dictate the quality of education you receive.
