Every June, we have our paddles poised at the starting line in San Marcos with one goal: finish strong in the World’s Toughest Canoe Race.
Team “Canoe Hut Already” is a competitive canoe paddling team based in Central Texas that proudly races in its biggest annual challenge, the Texas Water Safari. This year, we have ambitious goals, including improving our overall standing with a top-25 finish

Meet Team Canoe Hut Already!
The team features Kenney Howitt, a disciplined and strategic paddler with more than 12 years of competitive marathon experience and a three-time finisher of the Texas Water Safari. Kenney is fueled by the unwavering support of his wife, Jennifer, and their three daughters, who are always there cheering him across the finish line. Paddling alongside him are Larry and Sonja St. Clair—parents of two daughters, long-time martial artists, and dedicated outdoor endurance athletes. Never ones to shy away from a challenge, Larry and Sonja have tackled everything from 300+ mile adventure races to 75-mile rucks from Gonzales to The Alamo. They discovered their passion for long-distance paddling in 2014, with Larry completing seven races and Sonja eight—including an impressive solo finish.
WHAT IS THE TEXAS WATER SAFARI?
The Safari, billed as the “World’s Toughest Canoe Race,” is an annual 260-mile race from San Marcos to Seadrift. The first official race was held in 1963. Portaging dams, log jams, running rapids, and crossing San Antonio Bay are just a few of the challenges the Safari offers — not to mention the spiders, snakes, alligators, and mosquitoes. With an approximate 50% completion rate, this race tests not only physical strength and endurance, but mental fortitude at the highest level.
