On June 6th, 2025, Tawanda Ward was rushed from Newark-Wayne Hospital to Rochester General for an emergency back surgery. When she woke up in recovery, her life was forever changed—she had no feeling on the entire left side of her body from her stomach down to her toes.
Just a week later, on June 13th, she was transferred to Unity Hospital to begin intense rehabilitation. While courageously learning to walk again, she suffered a strained Achilles tendon. During this time, doctors also discovered blood clots in her leg and pulmonary embolisms in her lungs. Despite these serious complications, Tawanda was finally allowed to return home on June 23rd under strict orders for in-home therapy and medical follow-up.
Being home has brought its own set of challenges. The simplest daily tasks have become nearly impossible. Then, just as her family was adjusting to a new routine, she was dealt another devastating blow. On June 27th, her doctor ordered a follow-up MRI, which revealed her first surgery was unsuccessful. She is now back at Rochester General Hospital, preparing for a second emergency back surgery.
Anyone who knows Tawanda knows she is the kind of person who shows up—for anyone, at any time. A dedicated State employee for over 17 years, she is the rock of her family and the primary caregiver for her mother. She and her wife Mel are raising four incredible children who just want their mom to feel better and return to a life of love, laughter, and healing. Tawanda also owns and coaches Zone 6, a local AAU basketball team, and treats every player like one of her own.
The road ahead is long and uncertain. This fundraiser is to help cover medical bills, mobility-related home renovations (including new subflooring), and the financial strain that comes from being unable to work while undergoing such extensive treatment.
If you’re able to contribute, your generosity would mean the world to Tawanda, Mel, and their family. And if you can’t donate at this time, please consider sharing this page and keeping Tawanda in your thoughts and prayers.
Let’s rally around someone who has given so much to others.
