Hello! My name is Taurean Houston, a Senior in NYU's Film & Television program and a proud Atlanta native and active member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., serving as Treasurer & 2nd Vice President. I’m also the Founder and Creative Director of Color Kode, a multidisciplinary platform that fosters and empowers young artists to create, connect, and celebrate art across diverse art forms including but not limited to music, dance, fashion, film, and spoken word. Color Kode has been in collaboration with, requested by and performed for numerous organizations on NYU’s campus such as the Black Student Union (BSU), Academic Achievement Program (AAP), Opportunity Program (OP), Office of Global Inclusion (OGI), and more! Leading and organizing events with artists that span the creative web across NYU has provided me the privilege to bring impactful events to life. Today, I’m reaching out to make something historic happen — the first-ever BIPOC Fashion Show at NYU, which stands for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.
The theme, Empowerment Through Heritage, is about using fashion as a powerful expression of identity, resilience, and pride. It will create a space where BIPOC designers can showcase designs inspired by their heritage, from reimagined traditional attire to bold homages to cultural icons. The show will be a celebration of stories often untold, giving young artists a runway to share their cultural legacies with the world.
This project holds special significance to me for many reasons. With this event, the goal is to uplift BIPOC students, provide a platform for their unique voices, and hopefully spark something lasting on campus — a tradition that empowers students of color to showcase their artistry with pride, with the potential to positively impact the careers of many young artists who will be involved in the production. I’ve worked hard to bring community-driven events to life with limited resources, but for this milestone project, I’m asking for support to reach new heights.
Your donation to this GoFundMe will directly support:
- The design and production costs needed to bring our theme to life.
- Tools and resources for our student artists to tell their stories with the highest quality.
- The creation of an inspiring experience that uplifts, educates, and fosters unity across our campus.
This show is more than a fashion event; it’s a statement about belonging and heritage. Every dollar donated will help build a foundation for young BIPOC artists to take ownership of their narratives and inspire future students who will continue this legacy.
Together, we can make history and create a powerful moment of pride and self-expression at NYU. I humbly ask for your support in bringing this vision to life — whether that’s through a contribution or simply sharing this message with others. Thank you for believing in me and in the power of cultural pride and self-expression.
