Support Tati's Thesis Film: For Deena

For Deena is a personal documentary that follows the literal and emotional journey of myself and my best friend, Phoebe, as we travel to see her mother’s grave for the first time in her life. Deena took her own life when Phoebe was a young child, and was buried thousands of miles away from her immediate family due to a contentious relationship between Deena’s extended and immediate families. Traveling by plane, car, and train from Portland, Oregon to Dublin, Texas, the film will follow our ten day journey to reunite mother and daughter. As an artist who portrays complex emotional landscapes via abstract imagery and sound, I will combine analog and digital methods of capture as well as paintings, soundscapes, and plant processed film to create a collage that encompasses the experience of guiding one’s chosen family toward their family of origin.

Visiting Deena is something Phoebe and I have talked about since we became friends in 2017. The opportunity to realize this dream, and to make a film about it, is a milestone seven years in the making.

Funds will go toward travel expenses like a tank of gas, a roadside meal, train and hotel tickets, as well as rolls of Super 8 film.
