Hi, my name is Tate, and I’m reaching out for support as I work toward achieving my lifelong dream of competing in Equestrian events at the Special Olympics.
I was born with intellectual disabilities and adopted by my loving parents when I was a year old. From the time I was just three, horses have been my passion. I’ve always felt a deep connection to them—my parents even joke that I must have been a horse in a past life! I truly believed I could marry my first love, a horse named Spencer, from the therapeutic riding center I attended as a child.
Now, at 26 years old, I’ve finally saved enough money to buy a horse of my own—a dream I’ve worked toward for many years. My goal is to train and compete in the Special Olympics, but I need help to make this dream a reality.
There are many expenses involved in owning and caring for a horse:
• Tack and equipment
• Boarding fees
• Farrier and vet bills
• Ongoing training for me and my horse
I work part-time at a health facility helping care for children, and I also volunteer at the barn where I feed and clean stalls. I have tried to take on more hours, but they’re limited. My parents help when they can, but I’m doing everything I can to support myself and my horse—because this is more than a hobby to me... It’s my purpose.
Having a disability can be lonely. I’ve often struggled to make and keep typical friendships, and birthdays often come and go without a party or guests. But horses have always been there for me. They are my best friends. When I’m at the barn, I feel like I belong.
Every little bit helps—whether it’s $5 or simply sharing my story with others. I’ve also included a wish list of items that would help me continue caring for my horse and working toward my goal.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and for supporting me in doing what I love most. Your kindness means more than I can say.
With love and gratitude,
Tate (and my horse!)
