My very dear friend Tanja was diagnosed with breast cancer this past October, with tumors found in both breasts. For those of you who know her, you know that she is an extraordinary human being. She is fiery and kind, unbelievably strong, and quick to put her friends and family before herself. She will undergo a mastectomy on January 6, followed by a minimum of 18 weeks of chemotherapy and, perhaps, radiation. Then, there will be talks about reconstruction. Because of all of this, Tanja will be unable to work and will likely not be able to do so for 6 months.
Washington’s Paid Family Medical Leave, unfortunately, does not provide full pay, and it covers none of the tip portion of income that Tanja relies on to help pay her bills. Money will be tight as her income is diminished, as will her husband’s as he takes off work to care for her. She has the additional expenses of travel and lodging for numerous trips back and forth to Seattle for treatment and appointments, co-pays and deductibles, and the many expenses that will not be covered by her insurance, such as loose and comfortable clothes, supportive bras, prosthesis, OTC medications, and scarves and hats. And maybe even a wig or two.
Tanja is one of the strongest, most selfless people I have ever known and is always there to give her love and support or the shirt off her back to anyone that needs it. Now, it's time that we send back some of that love and support to Tanja. Anything you can donate will be truly appreciated. If you cannot help financially, prayers and shares are just as valuable! Everything we can do to help and surround her with love is what is most important so she can focus on healing. Please spread the word. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
