I am getting my Master of Fine Arts in Dance!

Introduction:
My name is Tania Santiago, and I am thrilled to have been accepted into the Masters of Fine Arts in Dance Program at the University of Arts. As an Afro-Brazilian immigrant and single mother, pursuing higher education in the United States has been a challenging journey. English being my second language has posed additional obstacles along the way. However, I am determined to overcome these hurdles and make a significant impact in the world of dance and choreography.

About Me:
I was born and raised in Salvador, Bahia, immersed in the vibrant culture of African-influenced Brazil. Throughout my life, I've had the privilege of teaching, dancing, and choreographing for renowned companies in my country. Besides my deep-rooted knowledge of Afro-Brazilian dance, I have also dedicated myself to studying various other dance forms such as Jazz, Ballet, West African, Afro-Cuban, and Modern dance.

For six incredible years, I had the honor of working with Olodum, a highly respected and internationally recognized Bloco Afro in Brazil. During my time with them, I had the opportunity to choreograph and perform on television, at concerts, and at music festivals. It was an exhilarating experience that further fueled my passion for dance.

Since 1997, I have been sharing my expertise by teaching classes and conducting workshops in different parts of the United States and Canada, including California, New York, Hawaii, Florida, and Vancouver. I have been fortunate to be an artist in residence in various school programs in San Francisco and have been featured as a teacher at the Brazil Camp in Northern California.

In 1999, I founded Aguas Dance Company and have been teaching Afro-Brazilian dance to students of all ages in the Bay Area. Every yeaar, I lead dance intensives to Salvador, allowing dancers to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of Brazil. Additionally, my contingent at the SF Carnaval Parade has received recognition and awards for its outstanding performances.

The Vision:
Through my work, I aim to expand the reach of Afro-Brazilian dance and culture, bridging communities and fostering unity. I firmly believe that representation matters, and it is crucial to have authentic voices telling our stories. By bringing the rich heritage of Afro-Brazilian dance to the forefront, I hope to create a space where people from diverse backgrounds can connect, heal, and experience pure joy.

The Opportunity:
The Masters of Fine Arts in Dance Program at the University of Arts is a tremendous opportunity for me to further develop my skills, expand my artistic vision, and enhance my knowledge of dance. The program spans over two summers, requires online classes with travel to France and to the east coast, and encompasses 18 months of intensive learning and growth. However, pursuing this program comes with financial challenges.

Financial Goal:
To help cover the expenses of tuition, travel, accommodation, and other associated costs, I am aiming to raise $15,000. The total tuition for the program amounts to $34,000, and additional expenses include travel to the east coast for classes, accommodation during the program, and continuing my teaching and creative work in San Francisco.
