Hi friends. Many of our family and friends know that Shady and I have been rescuing and rehabilitating bearded dragons for the last year now, even if just by a quick glance at our pages. In the last year, we have taken in 13 bearded dragons, and although we have lost two of them, we have successfully saved 11 of these amazing creatures in just under a year.
This last week, someone surrendered a year and a half old bearded dragon with "health issues" named Tangie. We picked Tangie up and immediately took her to the emergency vet. Tangie was diagnosed with severe gout in all four of her limbs.
Gout in a bearded dragon isn't much different than in humans and is very painful. The vet said that the gout crystals could typically be surgically removed but that hers are beyond that point, as the crystals are in all four limbs and have started to cause destruction to her bones. The fees for the emergency appointment, X-rays, bloodwork, antibiotics, and pain meds were almost $1000 by the end of the night. The pharmacy just called this morning to let us know that her pain meds are in and will be $86. Of course, this is what we choose to do for these animals, and what we choose to do with our hard-earned money, but at the end of the day, we want to continue to do more for her and all future rescues that are surrendered. We're transferring her over from the emergency vet that we took her to, to our vet in Maple Valley on Friday morning so that our vet can go over all of Tangie's X-rays and testing, and help us decide where to go from here. It could look anywhere from pain meds, antibiotics, and keeping her comfortable, to possibly surgery and a lot of work with her. We're not sure what to expect yet.
We're typically not the type to ask for help in this way but we can use any help we can get for her. Even if it's just $5, it adds up, so thank you all who's giving us and sweet Tangie the time to read her story with us so far and we will continue to update everyone on her journey. ❤️
