Tamesha is an Amazon warehouse worker, a whistleblower, and a fierce organizer and advocate for the rights of pregnant workers. At the end of June, Amazon illegally fired her after she shared her story—about Amazon refusing her basic accommodations during her pregnancy, leading to her son being born severely premature—at an investors meeting.

We are now raising funds to ensure Amazon's illegal retaliation does not send Tamesha and her baby back to a homeless shelter.

Context:

Tamesha is one of thousands of workers across the country who Amazon has forced to choose between her and her baby's health or her job. Rather than offer accommodations like short breaks or move her to a position that did not require lifting heavy objects, Amazon instructed her to take unpaid "time off" if she wanted to protect her health.

Amazon's refusal to comply with basic pregnancy accommodations caused Tamesha’s baby to be born severely premature. His twin brother tragically passed away in utero, while her surviving baby had to spend 140 days in the NICU. Her son is now recovering from a surgery related to his condition.

As a whistleblower, Tamesha has refused to be silent.

Her story has been covered in national press as an example of Amazon's widespread abuse of pregnant workers, and she has spoken at multiple Amazon investor meetings and at public rallies to demand Amazon follow the law and provide pregnant people with reasonable accommodations.

In retaliation for telling the truth and organizing for better conditions, Amazon fired her.

Amazon retaliated against Tamesha just days after she spoke at a top investors' meeting about Amazon's treatment of pregnant workers.
Amazon claims that in seeking to extend her leave of absence to take care of her son after his surgery, Tamesha violated the company's attendance policies—even though she was both in conversation to extend her leave of absence and had complied with company policy by requesting shifts.

Firing her now is particularly egregious: Tamesha's baby's surgery—and the leave required for care and recovery—was only necessary because Amazon refused to comply with her doctor's orders during her pregnancy.

Amazon has now broken the law twice – first refusing to grant accommodations and now trying to silence Tamesha and prevent further whistleblowers from coming forward.

This sudden loss of income has put Tamesha and her baby son at risk of returning to a homeless shelter.

The family is struggling to cover rent, basic needs, and ongoing medical care.

Your support will help Tamesha and her son stay afloat during this difficult time, and send a message to Amazon that they can't simply fire away the evidence of their policy failures.

  • 100 donations of $15 will cover the average monthly housing expenses in Tamesha’s area according to the MIT Living Wage Calculator.

  • 50 donations of $40 will cover the average food costs in Tamesha’s area for a parent and child.

  • 10 donations of $75 will cover the average medical expenses for a parent and child in Tamesha’s area – although her son’s costs may be much higher.

We are grateful for anything you can afford to give.

All donations go directly to Tamesha and will be used to pay for rent, groceries, and medical expenses.
