On May 19, my friend and comrade in the fight for collective liberation, Taj, was brutally assaulted by the Detroit PD at a Pro-Palestine rally, even as he complied with all of their instructions and demands. The physical injuries Taj sustained as a result of this assault have kept him out of work since then, and he just learned that he will not be physically able to return to work until 7/22 at the earliest. He has healthcare bills coming in from his emergency room visit, continued care with an orthopedic doctor, an MRI, and physical therapy. He also has bills related to everyday living, including electric, car insurance, food, medicine, etc. And this is all before any possible fines or court costs he may incur.

Taj has resisted making this ask--with the knowledge of people in greater need in Palestine and around the world, his awareness of his privilege has told him he shouldn't. I, along with other community members in the movement have told him that he must make this ask for assistance from our greater community in order to maintain his ability to self-sustain and continue his fight for collective liberation.

For the last few years, since returning to his hometown Detroit, Taj has been working on building a solid foundation for his life. He purchased a completely gutted home, and has been doing his best to rehab it over time. For more than a year, he has been working full-time for a local non-profit, maintaining the facilities that make the organization's community work and outreach possible. This home and this job have been life changing for him, by setting him on a path for success and giving him pride in himself and his community.

DPD's actions on 5/19, and the PTSD that has followed, have dealt Taj a blow he was not prepared for, and that has affected his growth and foundation building…for now. Taj will persevere. And, WE will persevere when it comes to the complete and total liberation of the people of Palestine, and all oppressed peoples in this world!
