Support Taj Altaji's Journey to Recovery

If you talk to anyone in the sobriety community, they’ll tell you that relapse is a part of recovery. Most people with 10, 20, even 30+ years of sobriety didn’t get it right on the first try. Sobriety, like anything else in life, is learned through trial, error, repetition, and persistence. And if you talk to anyone in the San Diego sobriety community, they’ll tell you that Taj Altaji has been a pillar of that community. Over the last 2 years, he’s taken his recovery seriously; showing up, putting in the work, and making a real impact. He’s a familiar face at many local 12-step meetings, a graduate of Stepping Stone inpatient rehab, willingly admitted himself in their outpatient program for a year and a half after, and is still a very active participant at Stepping Stone as an alumni.
Taj never wanted or expected relapse to be part of his story, but when his mental health started to decline due to profoundly traumatizing external and legal circumstances, he started experiencing a few setbacks. The important thing? He’s not giving up! He’s committed to his recovery and was immediately willing and determined to get back on track. But he can’t do it alone.
Right now, Taj needs our help. He has already voluntarily admitted himself and completed a detoxification program and is currently staying at Vista Balboa Crisis Home for an extended stay, getting the mental health support he needs—the very thing that has triggered his relapses. As soon as that’s done, he’ll be heading back into residential rehab. But this level of commitment comes at a cost. Taj has had to take four months off work, meaning he has no income during this time.
This is where we come in. Taj needs about $1,500 a month to cover his rent and basic expenses ($1,100 rent/$100 SDGE/$300 other expenses) while he focuses on saving his life. That’s a total of $6,000 just to keep things stable while he focuses on getting better. It’s a big financial burden and as a private contractor, he doesn't qualify for disability—but if we come together, we can make a real difference.
If Taj has ever been there for you, if he’s ever inspired you, or if you simply believe in second chances—please consider donating towards his continued recovery. Every dollar helps. Whether it’s $5, $50, or more, it all adds up and makes a real difference. More than anything, let’s remind Taj that he’s not alone in this fight. If you can’t donate, please share this message. Let’s rally around him the way he’s always shown up for others and give him the support he deeply deserves. Michael Mack.
