On the night of May 30th My husband was attacked by a group of about 10 young adults as we waited in our car for our burrito at our local taco food truck. The group walked up to our car using the "N word." When my husband and I asked them, if they were using the slur, they began spitting, yelling and eventually jumped my husband as they violently kicked and punched his head. I broke my finger as I attempted to pull them off of my husband. All but one of the assailants ran off before police arrived. The remaining assailant was still served his food and was not arrested as police stated "it was his word against ours."
The entire incident was filmed on tape and has been mishandled by police. We went to the local newspaper in the hopes that going public would help us get justice:

It has been quite a while since the article about our assault was published. So much, yet so little, has happened since then. A bungled police investigation led the DA to not press charges despite seeing the whole assault and its lead up in 4K video. Around the same time we found this out, the Lt. who assured us and the Press Democrat how difficult a hate crime is to prove was involved in a similar incident where a homophobe shouted slurs in his direction. In his situation, the assailant was immediately arrested and charged with a felony for infringing upon someone else’s civil rights.

When we tried to get an answer from city officials about the hypocrisy and to find out if we could get some of that justice, that is when the police stopped returning our calls. We went a second time to speak at City Hall where the clerk cut the mic mid speech, and the mayor assured us that we would receive a call from Chief Cregan that would never come. One city council member proposed “restorative justice” without elaboration, another asked if we were suing them. We then conducted our own investigation and discovered connections of our assailants to the fire department, the police, as well as the owners of the restaurant where the assault occurred, El Roy’s. This week the council is censuring another member for misconduct, so it is becoming clear that we cannot rely on city officials to have the integrity to do what is right.
We now have an attorney who is providing us the services that a non-corrupt government would have, but unfortunately it is at our own cost. This is where we must ask you for help. The police, the DA, and everyone else involved are clearly covering for something and it is our lawyer that is helping us get to the bottom of it. Your donation, however big or small, will go towards private investigators and clerical work to receive police body cam footage and interviews that we have been refused. This will help us reach justice in what was clearly a hate crime that officials want to brush under the rug.

If you believe in the equitable treatment of all people, and want to live in a world where a husband and wife can enjoy dinner without being subjected to racial slurs and a violent attack, please share this with anyone else who thinks we all deserve the at least bare minimum of a just society.

We appreciate any support.
