Hello, my name is Geen Lee and I am a senior BFA transgender woman filmmaker at the University of Arizona. I'm making my senior thesis film titled, "Synesthesia", a film about being yourself and making art authentic to your experience.
Our Films Logline
When an android seeking to be "human" tries to make the perfect song, she realizes all she needs is a change in perspective to become the idealized version of herself that she was always wanting to be.
What is Synesthesia?
Synesthesia is a sci-fi transgender allegorical film about somebody coming out and finding the beauty in being themselves. Our film uses the genre of a sci-fi to tell a trans story that can identifiable by everyone.
The main character, Artemis, is a tv head android who wishes that they were born human. They have robot dreams of being human, and that is something they wish for. To have been born differently. They use these dreams to make human art, music that reflect the feeling from her dreams. However this is an effort that ignores who she is, and she has to face that reality.
Why "Synesthesia" Matters
We believe telling Artemis' story is important and that her story, our story, is something very powerful and a story that needs to be told. In this time where it is increasingly harder and hard to come out and exist as a transgender, or even as a queer individual is so dangerous, it makes it important to tell that story. Make sure that we are not forgotten. We are here and always have been. That's why its important to tell our stories to the world, especially in hard times.
Synesthesia is more than just a movie, it's something that will live on past us. It's more than any one individual, it can become so much more. It'll be a part of something bigger and you can be a part of that too.
Where You Come In
To ensure that we can execute the vision of this unique story and to make sure this story is told, we need your support. With full transparency the money we receive will be spent on Post-Production, Music Rights, and Marketing & Distribution.
Post-Production - Editing, Sound design, re-recording lines, color grading and music to make the movie truly shine.
Music Rights - We are actively in talks and working towards getting the rights to music like Touch by Daft Punk from the 2013 Random Access Memories album. But we are working with artists like Spellcasting as well to give the film a unique sound!
Marketing & Distribution - Festival submission fees, promotional materials and screening to ensure the film reaches a wide audience.
A Bit More About the Project
Synesthesia is a very ambitious project, we are hoping to do a lot with the little that we have as young filmmakers. However, that doesn't mean we are not dreaming big.
On top of trying to get the rights to an amazing song by Daft Punk and collaborating with others for score, the film is using three different formats of film. In the film we make use of digital 6K footage, analog footage from a camcorder, and 16 mm film from a Bolex 16 mm film camera we have gotten our hands on. All while having a specific vision and thematic reasoning behind these choices.
Become a Part of Our Journey:
As a transgender filmmaker it's not just a passion to but an obligation to tell stories of transgender and queer people. And with your support, it will help ensure that we are able to tell those stories and that it is able to reach a wider audience to contribute to the ongoing conversation about being and coming out as transgender/queer in this world.
We deeply appreciate every contribution towards this passion project. Whether the support is shown through donations or by sharing the page on social media and with your friends and family, everything helps and together we can make a truly unique story that will resonate with a lot of people.
We cannot wait to share this story with you.
