Hi! My name is Michelle, and I’m reaching out to share the story of my partner, Syd. Syd is a remarkable and resilient human being who has spent years navigating the complexities of living in a body that does not reflect his authentic self. Witnessing his daily struggles with gender dysphoria and the societal challenges that accompany being a trans person in this country has been both heart-breaking and deeply motivating.
Top surgery is not a cosmetic choice for Syd; it is a medically necessary procedure that would transform his quality of life. This surgery would provide him with the freedom to move through the world with confidence, safety, and dignity. It would allow him to see his reflection and finally recognize the man he knows himself to be. Beyond the personal liberation it offers, top surgery would also help Syd feel safer in a society that can be hostile, unkind, and even violent towards transgender individuals.
Right now, Syd lives with the constant fear of being scrutinized or even endangered when using public spaces like restrooms that align with his gender identity. The reality is, 48% of transgender individuals in the United States have experienced physical violence in their lifetime. Additionally, transgender people are about 4 times more likely than cisgender individuals to experience violent victimization, including assault and sexual violence, as reported by the U.S. Department of Justice. The ability to “blend in” and be perceived as the man he is would alleviate this fear and allow him to exist in his body without the crushing weight of dysphoria and grant him the freedom to exist without constant fear of discrimination, harassment, or violence.
Transgender people face systemic barriers to accessing healthcare, and Syd is no exception. Waiting lists to receive gender-affirming surgery through insurance stretch beyond 18 months. For someone living with the daily pain of gender dysphoria, that is 18 months too long. And with the results of recent elections, the trans community faces an even greater threat: the possibility that life-saving gender-affirming care may be stripped away entirely. This is obviously so much bigger than Syd. This is about standing up for trans rights and pushing back against the wave of anti-trans legislation and rhetoric sweeping across this country. Denying people access to essential medical care is a violation of basic human rights.
The cost of private surgery, including the procedure itself, travel, and post-operative care, is substantial. We estimate the total cost to be around $14,000 and we are reaching out to our community and family for support. Your support, whether through a donation, sharing this fundraiser, or sending him encouragement, would mean the world to him.
Syd is a strong, kind, and compassionate man who has faced more challenges than anyone should, simply for living as his true self. He deserves this care, not just to alleviate his dysphoria, but to live without the constant fear of being targeted in public spaces. This surgery will allow him to move through the world with greater safety and peace of mind.
We hope that in the future, we are able to give back to this community of people. Fighting for a future where no trans person has to beg for the care they need. To push back against fear and hatred and to stand in solidarity with a community that deserves love, respect, and justice.
Thank you for standing with us and for helping Syd move forward into the life he deserves.

A message from Syd
Words can’t fully express how grateful I am for your support as I embark on this life-changing journey to feel truly at home in my own body. After 31 years of struggling with a reflection that never felt like me, this surgery will finally allow me to see the person I’ve always known myself to be. It’s not just about how I look, but about reclaiming my identity and living authentically. Your kindness and generosity are making this dream possible, and I will carry your support with me every step of the way. Thank you so much.
