Support Sydney and Baby Jade's Road to Recovery

On May 16th our family welcomed my granddaughter Jade Rosemarie at 37 weeks by emergency c-section weighing 4 pounds 11 ounces. Due to complications with my daughter’s pregnancy we were all prepared for a tiny baby that was going to need lots of feedings to help her gain weight, however, what we didn’t anticipate was Baby Jade was born with two holes in her heart, a possible chromosome disorder, two fingers needing surgery to separate them, and her wrists needing attention to strengthen and straighten with occupational therapy and or other treatments that unfortunately we are unaware of at this moment. As my daughter Sydney was recovering from her c-section the unimaginable happened. She was experiencing fevers, swollen ankles, and high blood pressure. Because of this her primary care doctor sent her to the hospital. Neither of us anticipated what transpired next. During the next few days after extensive testing the doctors realized Sydney had a severe infection that they could not identify or determine what to do next. After an extreme amount of antibiotics that were not helping, her condition worsened. Finally, the doctors realized in order to save her life they had to perform another surgery. On Sunday June 2nd she endured a second surgery to flush out the infection in her abdomen and determine the cause of the infection. After a two-hour surgery the doctors informed me, her infection was much greater than they expected. Sydney had a mass on her kidney that had infected her entire abdomen. Thankfully, the surgeon was able to save her kidney but because the infection was so rampant they unfortunately had to remove a portion of her bowel. The surgery was extensive and required a horizontal incision from her lower breastbone to her c-section incision that required 24 staples to close. After 11 days in the hospital, she has finally returned home to recover. While she was in the hospital, myself and close family members have been taking daily 10 to 12 hour shifts to care for Baby Jade and my 16-month old grandson, and now we are also caring for my daughter and will need to do so for the next four to six weeks. The doctors continue to remind my daughter that even though she is home she is still extremely critical and is not able to care for her children. Unfortunately, their father does not have paid leave and has already missed several weeks of work. Now that my daughter is home, she requires home care with three to six weeks of IV antibiotic treatments, cleaning a drain line from her kidney to keep the infection from returning, and complete bed rest to recover. All while, family members continue to assist with Baby Jade and my grandson so dad can keep working. While we anticipated Baby Jade to be small, we did not foresee that she would have so many unknown medical conditions, or my daughter’s long stay in the hospital with months of recovery. While my daughter is blessed with great grandparents, grandparents, and great aunts that are assisting daily with housework, groceries, and childcare, the reality is Sydney and Baby Jade still both have a long road to recovery and many doctor appointments in the future. This should be an amazing time for their family, but unfortunately that is just not the case. They will not only endure a physical road to recovery for both of them but a mental one as well. Please consider assisting their family to provide for living expenses and much needed continued care for Sydney and Baby Jade, this is a difficult time for all, and any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
