Mom (Susan) was injured in an auto accident on Saturday, November 8th, 2025, at 11:18 pm. Her best friend and friend of over 30 years, Phyllis, was also injured in the accident. Mom's vehicle hit a deer that they did not see, which caused them to lose control of the vehicle. Her vehicle went into a ditch and then overturned multiple times. Mom and Phyllis were both taken to the nearest hospital in Topeka, KS. Mom was in the ICU trauma center for three days due to her injuries. Mom will remain in the Spinal Center until they are able to operate on her shattered ankle. Mom will then need to stay at the Kansas Rehab in Topeka until she is cleared to go home. We are told it will be a long recovery. Mom has several injuries: a fractured right shoulder, ribs 3 and 4 fractured, T8 vertebrae fractured, T Spine 4-9 vertebrae fractured, left ankle shattered, and a tibia fracture. Mom has received 5 units of blood due to blood leaking into her muscles from the hip and right shoulder injuries. Mom had surgery on Monday, November 10th, to install an external fixator on her left ankle. Once the swelling goes down enough, she will have surgery to reconstruct her shattered ankle. On top of all she is going through with the accident, she will also need surgery to reconstruct her bladder. That surgery was originally scheduled for Wednesday, November 12th, in Kansas City, MO, but due to her accident, the surgery has been postponed for a later date. Recovery time for the bladder reconstruction is about 6 weeks. Mom is the only one working in the household and due to the accident, it will be a while before she can return to work, if at all. My mom and dad will need a lot of support and help during this time. Mom will be able to receive short-term disability through her employer, but it will be a percentage of her pay. We understand that things are tight financially for a lot of people, but anything helps! We would be extremely thankful for any and all help to keep mom and dad afloat during this tough time! If you cannot help financially, we ask that you continue to send up prayers, as they are much needed as well! Financial contributions will be used for rent, utilities, gas for Dad to go see Mom (50+ mile trip), food, anything mom may need that insurance doesn't cover, and any other bills they may have. Commerce Bank is also willing to accept funds that will go directly to mom and dad's joint account. Checks must be addressed to Garry L. and Susan R. Cherry to be deposited. Cash can be deposited as well by just telling a bank teller their names. Please include middle initials so the funds are added to the appropriate account. Any funds received here will be deposited to our parents' joint account. Our family would like to give our thanks in advance for all help! We know our mother is loved and supported by many, and we are so grateful for that!
