October 17th is a day Susan and Ed will never forget. At 10:00 AM, Susan lost her job—news that would shake anyone. But only two hours later, her world shattered even further when she got the call no spouse ever wants to receive. Ed was being rushed to Sentara Heart Hospital for an emergency 14-hour surgery after suffering a Type A Aortic Dissection. As doctors fought to save his life, Ed endured 11 mini-strokes and a major stroke to his T9, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. In one day, this family’s entire future changed.

Thanks to the VA, some of Ed’s care is covered, but so much is not. And now, as of 11/26, he is at McGuire VA Hospital in Richmond, beginning what will be the hardest fight of his life. The uncertainty is overwhelming, yet they continue to hold on to hope—one day, one update, one small victory at a time. All of this is happening while Susan also cares for her special-needs son. The weight she is carrying is unimaginable, yet every time you talk to her, she is still trying to stay positive, still pushing forward, still believing that they will make it through this. Their strength is incredible. Their need is real. And their story is one that reminds us how quickly life can change—and how much support means in the moments when everything feels impossible.
