For Susan

Susan is Melanie’s mother, a 51-year-old single mother of 6 children, grandmother of 9 with 1 on the way, and a USA Army veteran who served as a 001 airborne unit medic. She spent her life in the medical field, while also working 3 jobs to feed her family and studying to be a nurse before being diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2017. She fought it, beat it, and went into remission. During that time, she poured her heart into building Blumen Haus, a floral business and community space inspired by her love of gardening and beauty. One of the most beautiful spots in Amana is the waterfall she designed there, part of the legacy she wanted to leave behind for her children and grandchildren. Susan was just shy of hitting 5 years cancer free before being diagnosed again, this time with cancer in her lungs. She was given 8 to 15 months to live, but she surpassed it. When it hit her liver, she was told she should have been dead in three weeks, and that was 3 years ago. When it was in her bones, you could still catch her doing yard work and tending to her business. Even when she got pneumonia two winters ago and thought she would not make it, she did.

Now the cancer is in Susan’s brain. She was hospitalized this week, was unconscious for two days straight, and was given 2 weeks to live, but she still got better and was released home. They have stopped all treatments, but Susan is not done fighting. She is a Christian, and her love of God has carried her through every hardship. She is a walking miracle. Her business is still unfinished and still under construction, as it has been hard between money and her sickness. She has always had love to spare. Melanie wanted Susan to see more of the world like she always hoped to, but right now Susan has to save her energy because her goal is to make it to her youngest son’s graduation this May. Susan has been a miracle to so many people, and this is a chance to give something back to someone who has spent a lifetime giving to others. The funds raised will help with medical expenses, support her unfinished business, and provide comfort and end-of-life care for Susan and her family. Any donation, prayer, or share would help.
