I’m running this campaign on behalf of Sunny! Sunny is a disabled and queer member of multiple online spaces and is hoping to be involved with more community in person. One of the biggest things getting in the way of this is her mobility.
Currently, she has a cheap manual wheelchair from Amazon. It has helped the years she's had it, but her health is declining to the point that pushing her own chair sets her back so far. When she leaves the house, it takes days of painful recovery to function again. Attempting to leave the house, even for smaller errands, leads to her being unable to do the things she like at home either. When you have limitations in your strength and endurance due to disabilities, and then also dealing with pain, self-propelling a manual wheelchair becomes exhausting, and nearly impossible once said exhaustion starts piling on.
As her birthday is coming up, and her dream motorized wheelchair is on sale, we are trying our best to gather funds to get the wheelchair before the sale ends! This wheelchair is really rad. It’s lighter, it can fold up really small, it’s fully motorized, it’s comfortable enough to not strain her body. It’s genuinely a perfect fit.
Increasing Sunny’s mobility and independence would be the biggest quality-of-life change for her. From being able to use energy on daily routines to help reduce pain, to finding in-person community, it cannot be understated how much this would change her life. As a deaf individual, finding community can be especially challenging, and often requires traveling as she lives in a smaller town.
Currently for all travel, she relies on a caregiver, who is also her spouse. However, within the last couple years, her caregiver has been showing signs of chronic illness and pain, and said caregiver needs to take a bunch of breaks when trying to help Sunny. So two-in-one, you’d be helping TWO disabled queer people!!
List of ways this would help Sunny
- Helping access community
- Opening a whole world of travel
- Helping avoid straining their conditions/worsening them over time
- Being able to actually leave the house for errands without painful recovery every single time
- More accessibility to specialists, as she'd be able to travel farther than she currently can
- She's been wanting to go back to school, and this opens up that possibility!
List of reasons why you should donate
- Directly contributing to a disabled queer individual with a big need
- Helping someone access community
- When you’re walking around the PNW and you see Sunny around, you’ll know YOU made that happen.
- Receive your good karma for this year
Even $1 helps!!! Genuinely! Every share, every dollar, every cent could be life changing for us.
